Childdcare/education is my love, what one might need to perform childcare/education is my passion. To advocate with other dedicated educators for the rights of the childcare professionals, young learners, and their parents have become my inspiration and life's mission. DVAEYC ~ Delwarare Valley Association for the Education of Young Children is a great organization in the Tri-state area of Philadelphia, New Jersey, and Delware that advocates for the young learner. This is a local chapter of NAEYC. Below is the current newsletter... Here is a link for parents for preparing their young learner for
kindergarten

I am a firm believer that a child's ability to learn is based on the teacher's ability to understand how that child learns. Children are young for only a moment, yes, I know that might sound silly, but it is true. Once that window of opportunity of learning and development is closed, with a child receiving limited learning and development experiences, it is possible that the child might encounter difficulties in comprehension, writing, speaking, and physical abilities in the primary grades. It is becoming clearer that the child's social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development are strengthened the most during the preschool years, allowing the child more success in the primary school years and so forth, so as an educator this is my passion to fight for the young learner

DVAEYC is pleased to provide this timely electronic newsletter on issues related to early childhood advocacy. For more information, please contact suzann@dvaeyc.org.

Early Childhood in the News
ECE in the Federal Budget
A recent U.S. News & World Report article takes a look at President Obama's $69 billion education budget proposal, which includes significant investments in early childhood- spending that some critics aren't convinced is necessary.
Public vs. Private in Pre-K
Education Week reports on the unintended strain that free, publicly funded prekindergarten can put on the finances of some private, fee-supported early childhood providers when they compete for both children and qualified teachers.
Pre-K's Positive Outcome
Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute reports that Georgia's pre-kindergarten program produces significant positive outcomes for children, regardless of family income level or English language skills. Established in 1995, Georgia's prekindergarten program is one of the country's oldest state-funded programs, annually serving more than 81,000 4-year-olds of all income levels in a variety of settings, with no charge to families.
Utah Set to Fund Pre-K with Social Impact Bonds
Utah is poised to pass legislation creating a "School Readiness Board" that would contract with private entities making the initial investment to fund quality preschool programming; the $3 million provided by the state would be used to pay back private investors-with interest-if children in the preschool program are grade ready by 3rd grade.

Can Afternoon Naps Help Preschoolers Learn Better?
Research from the University of Massachusetts has documented that classroom naps can enhance memory and support learning. In a typical day, preschoolers pack information and social interactions into the short-term storage areas of their brains and a nap allows information to move from temporary storage to more permanent storage, from the hippocampus to the cortical areas of the brain.
