Inspiring approaches to fostering learning during early childhood.

Do these lyrics bring back memories?… “It's a beautiful day in this neighborhood, a beautiful day for a neighbor. Would you be mine? Could you be mine? Please won't you be my neighbor?”  ®Fred Rogers. What a familiar song, in fact, most of us in the United States grew-up singing this song and viewing the television show on Public Broadcasting Show (PBS).  The show featured the beloved Mr. Rogers, who died in February 2003, over the years Mr. Rogers always represented an inspiring approach to learning, so it was no surprise that November of the same year of his death a center was developed and established in his name.. . The Fred Rogers Center .

What is so innovative about the center is its commitment to communication, collaboration, and creative change.  In addition, the center has a support system for underserved and under-resourced teachers, home based providers, and families for children birth to age 5.  The web-based site help is to support early language, literacy and media literacy.

This blog has influenced my thoughts on effective learning experiences when incorporating  technology. I did not like using technology to introduce new learning, but used it to reinforce learning.  For instance, I introduced  the five senses to my class. I wrote them on the eraser board with images.  When the children had computer time, we locate a five senses game and the children were able play and navigated from screen to screen with ease. This was a good process,  I watched how fast the children adapted to technology.  However, what was discovered in that process was that  four of my preschoolers did not understand the five senses that were written on the eraser board, but after the computer program they were able to identify and understand the five senses on the eraser board.  In all learning there should be moderation, computer/ technology, teacher directed, and child directed, it takes a combination of learning techniques to help the preschooler development in his unique and timely manner.
